MARINE FISHERIES ACTIVITIES

The Cuddalore district has a coastal Length of 57.5 Km. comprising of 49 fishing villages with total marine fishermen population of 47000. Among them 23840 are active fishermen and nearly 15000 fisherwomen are engaged in fishing related activities. There are 235 Mechanized fishing boats and 2345 FRP boats, Non motorised boats 1906 are operating in this district. There are 36 Marine Fishermen Coop Societies, and 41 Marine Fisherwomen Coop societies, 22 Inland Fishermen Co-op. Societies and 6 Inland Fisherwomen Co-op. Societies are functioning in Cuddalore District. Various welfare schemes are being implemented through the coop societies. Fishing boats are berthed at Cuddalore fishing harbour, Mudasalodai Fish landing centre, Samiyarpettai Fish Landing Centre, MGR Thittu Fish Landing Centre, Parangipettai-Annankoil Fish landing centre and Pettodai Fish Landing Centre doing fishing. The annual total Marine fish production is 25,000 tons. The fishes caught are being sold in local market and also to nearby Districts and to Kerala State.

NATIONAL MARINE FISHERMEN/ FISHERWOMEN SAVINGS CUM RELIEF SCHEME

In order to create savings habit and to have income during lean months of fishing, savings–cum relief scheme is being implemented for marine fishermen and fisherwomen. Members of fishermen and fisherwomen cooperative societies, below poverty line are eligible to join in this scheme. Every beneficiary has to remit Rs.175 for eight month (from January to August ) nine month September Rs.100/- the total amount of Rs.1500/- as subscription. The State and Central Government are contributing the matching grant of Rs.1500/- each equally, and in case of Fisherwomen the State Government alone contribute Rs.3000/- and total amount of Rs.4500/- is being disbursed to all enrolled fisherwomen under this Scheme.

SUBSIDY SCHEME FOR THE PURCHASE OF OUT BOARD MOTORS FOR THE TRADITIONAL FISHING CRAFTS.

This Scheme is shared between Central and State equally. This scheme provides assistance to the fishermen for motorization of their country crafts like catamaran Mechanization enables them to extend their area of operation for longer distance in shortest period of time and this results in good catches. Under this scheme 50% of cost of the engine is given as subsidy i.e., up to Rs. 30,000/- for Out Board Motor.

SCHEME FOR THE EXEMPTION OF SALES TAX FOR THE DIESEL UTILISED FOR THE FISHING VESSELS.

The scheme is implemented from 2004-05 onwards. Under this scheme, the mechanized fishing boats are eligible to get sales tax exempted diesel subject to monthly ceiling of 1,800 liters per boat for 10 months except the ban period and traditional crafts fitted with out board motors are eligible up to 350 litres per month. 204 mechanized fishing boats and 1,225 FRP catamarans were benefited in this district.

RELIEF ASSISTANCE TO MARINE FISHERMEN FOR BAN PERIOD :

During the fishing ban period for 61 days the government announced the relief amount of Rs.5,000-/ per family on the basis of Ration Card of marine fishermen. Accordingly every year the relief amount is being distributed to the family of marine fishermen in Cuddalore District.

RELIEF ASSISTANCE TO MARINE FISHERMEN FOR FISHING LEAN PERIOD :

The Government announced the special relief amount of Rs.5000/- per marine fishermen family during the year 2011 onwards. Accordingly every year the relief amount was distributed to the families of marine fishermen in Cuddalore District.

ONLINE REGISTRATION OF FISHING CRAFTS

Uniform online registration of Fishing Crafts in all coastal villages of Tamil Nadu is being undertaken as part of National Security as per the Government of India norms. Accordingly in Cuddalore District so far 239 Mechanized Fishing Boats and 1965 no of motorized country crafts have been covered under online registration and necessary certificates were issued to fishermen.

BIO-METRIC CARDS TO MARINE FISHERMEN AND FISFERMEN

Totally 16,900 application were received from marine fishermen of Cuddalore District and photo capture was done for 15931 nos. So far 6,602 Biometric cards are disbursed to fishermen and the action is being taken to distribute the balance ID cards shortly. Totally 12371 application were received from marine fisherwomen of Cuddalore District and photo capture was done for 12371 nos. action is being taken to distribute the ID cards shortly.

FISHING HARBOUR AND FISH LANDING CENTRE

In Cuddalore District fishermen welfare schemes are being implemented to uplift the revenue of the Fishermen. The Annankoil Fish Landing Centre in Cuddalore District was upgraded with the cost Rs.18.91 cores and brought the Fish Landing centre for the benefit of fishermen.
Except this the Cuddalore Fishing Harbour is upgraded with the cost of Rs. 10.35 cores and the Mudasalodai Fish Landing Centres is extended and upgraded with the cost of Rs. 7.78 cores under the financial assistance of NFDB. Also the Samiyarpettai and MGR Thittu Fish Landing Centre were constructed at a cost of Rs.2.50 cores and Rs. 2.93cores respectively. The above Fish Landing Centres were inaugurated for the use of Fishermen on 15.07.2015 by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu through Video Conference. The Parangipettai Vellar Bar mouth stability and upgrading work has been implemented under the NABARD financial assistance of Rs. 20.20 cores.

FIFTY PERCENTAGE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO FISHERMEN FOR CONSTRUCTION OF TUNA LONG LINERS CUM GILL NETTERS

In order to reduce the fishing pressure and fishing fleet strength in the inshore waters and to optimally exploit the underexploited offshore fishery resources, the Government of Tamilnadu implemented a scheme to construct new Mechanized/Motorized Fishing Boats in to Tuna Long Liners cum Gill Netters. For which the government announced 50% subsidy (maximum 30 lakhs) for the fishermen who come forward construction of above Tuna Fishing Boats. According, in Cuddalore District, Five units comprising 18 fishermen were selected. On 15.07.2015 Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu inaugurated the above subsidy scheme by handing over the work orders to the selected fishermen.

NET SUBSIDY TO INLAND FISHERMEN

In Cuddalore District, under NADP Scheme, 75 Inland Fisherman Co-op members were selected and given 50% subsidy of Rs. 7500 per fisherman to the tune of Rs. 5,62,500/- for the year 2014-15. Out of which 75 beneficiaries was given subsidy to the tune of Rs. 5,62,500/- the balance subsidy to 6 beneficiaries will be distributed shortly.
2015-16 under NADP Scheme 275 Inland Fisherman Co-op members were selected for gill net given 50% subsidy of Rs. 7500 per fisherman to the tune of Rs.20,62,500/- and 170 members were selected for cash net 50% subsidy of Rs. 2500 per fisherman to the tune of Rs.4,25,000/- the year 2015-16.
2017-18 under NADP Scheme 100 Inland Fisherman Co-op members were selected for gill net given 50% subsidy of Rs. 10000 per fisherman to the tune of Rs.10,00000/-

FISHERMEN WELFARE BOARD SCHEME

During 2007 -2008, the Tamilnadu Government has announced the Tamilnadu Fishermen Welfare Board scheme for the benefit of the fishermen and fisherwomen. Men who have engaged in fishing activities and women who have engaged in activities like fish drying and sale of fish will also be covered under this scheme.Under this scheme in Cuddalore District, 10,932 fishermen and fisherwomen are enrolled in this scheme. The scheme is in progress.

CUDDALORE BARMOUTH DEEPENING AND GROYNES(BREAK WATER)

The Fishing Boats incidents of being met with accident at Cuddalore Fishing harbour bar mouth due to low depth and during heavy tides in a regular occurrence. It causes damages to fishing crafts and fishermen were got injured. In some times it may lead to death. The Cuddalore District Fishermen periodically insisting to deepen the bar mouth and requesting to form the Groynes (break water) in Cuddalore Fishing Harbour Bar mouth. During February 2015 a peace committee was convened with the fishermen of Cuddalore District, and assured to take necessary action for deepening of the bar mouth and form the break water/ Groynes at Cuddalore Fishing Harbour bar mouth. Hence to uplift the economic status of fishermen and their livelihood, the deepening of the bar mouth and formation of the break water/ Groynes in Cuddalore Fishing Harbour bar mouth is very essential. In the regards Joint Inspection was made by Honourable Minister for Fisheries and Honourable Minister for Industrial on. 10. 06.2016.
