About Transport Department :
Two Regional Transport Offices are functioning in this District. One at Cuddalore and another one at Chidambaram. Under the Regional Transport Office Cuddalore two Unit Offices are functioning at Panruti and Neyveli in the Jurisdiction of Cuddalore, Kurunjipadi and Panruti Taluks. Under the Regional Transport Office Chidambaram one Unit Office Vridhachalam is functioning in the Jurisdiction of Chidambaram, Kattumannarkoil, Bhuvanagiri, Vridhachalam, Pennadam, Thittagudi and Veppur Taluks.
COMPUTERIZATION OF THIS DEPARTMENT:-
This Department aims to realize these objectives through adequate enforcement of statutory and non-statutory regulations coupled with modernization and computerization. In the recent years all Regional Transport Offices are computerized. Under the Computerization in Regional Transport Offices in Cuddalore District works related with Learners Licence, Driving Licence, International Driving Licence, New Registration of vehicles, Permit, Hypothecation cancel and Endorsement, Tax and Fees Collection are done by online process. However, the Driving Liecence and the vehicle details can be viewed instantly by online.
FUNCTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT
- The prime functions of the Transport Department are as follows:-
- Issue of Driving and Conductor Licences.
- Registration of Motor Vehicles
- Issue of fitness certificate to Vehicles
- Grant of permits to Transport Vehicles.
- Collection of Motor Vehicles Tax and Fees.
- Inspection of vehicles involved in accidents.
- Checking of Vehicles on road to enforce the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act and Rules.
- Implementing road safety measures and controlling vehicular pollution.
This Department discharges the above functions in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 and Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Taxation Act and Rules, 1974 and the amendments made as per the present scenario.

The following works are being carried out in this Office :
- Issue of Learner’s Licence, Driving License and Conductor Licence etc.
- Registration of Motor Vehicles, Renewal of Registration Certificate etc.
- Issue of Fitness Certificate and Renewal of Fitness Certificate etc.
- Issue of National Goods Carriage Permit, Goods Carriage Permit, Contract Carriage Permit (Tourist Taxi, Maxi Cab, Autorickshaw, Shared Auto, etc), Educational Institution Bus, Private Service Vehicle, Stage Carriage Permit etc.
- Checking of all classes of Motor Vehicles in respect of Road Safety aspects and other offences and collecting Compounding fee.
- Action taken against the Driving Licence holders who involved in fatal accident and violation of Transport Rules.
- Celebration of Road Safety week in the month of January every year to make awareness among the public.
- Checking of Pollution Testing Centre, Emergency Accident Relief Centre etc.
