1. Panruti Palappazham (Panruti Jackfruit)
Panruti, located in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, is renowned for its jackfruit cultivation and trade. The region has a long-standing association with jackfruit production, with the crop supporting local farmers, traders and businesses involved in harvesting, transportation and marketing.
Panruti jackfruit is distinguished by its large fruit size, characteristic shape, golden-yellow edible pulp, pleasant aroma and sweet flavour with a mild tangy undertone. The ripe fruit is generally tender and juicy, with a relatively non-sticky texture. Unripe jackfruit is also used as a vegetable in curries and other traditional preparations.
The geographical and climatic conditions of the region, together with established cultivation practices, contribute to the characteristics and reputation of Panruti jackfruit. Improved varieties, including PLR-1 and PLR-2, have also contributed to the development of jackfruit cultivation in the region.
The GI application was filed by the Tamil Nadu State Agricultural Marketing Board and Maligampattu Farmer Producer Association under Application No. 836, covering jackfruit under Class 31. The application was advertised as accepted in the Geographical Indications Journal No. 200 dated 30 November 2024.
